Biography

Tom brings a breadth of experience to his work in philanthropy. During 15 years at the Open Society Foundations he moved across and up through the organization; starting as a program officer and ending as a member of OSF’s senior management, leading the organization’s Grant Making Support Group. He has worked in the US and globally, in alliance with a broad network within the sector, on efforts to advance effective and strategic grant making and improve foundation practices.

As a consultant he now works with such clients as the Ford Foundation, Proteus Fund, and a philanthropic LLC.  Prior to OSF, Tom was a professor at the University of Massachusetts, where he studied the history of social movements and how they were shaped by law, lawyers, and funders.

He has JD and PhD from New York University.  Tom lives in Northampton, Massachusetts where he gardens and cooks for his family.
